Floor Extension and Single House Renovation in Lycabettus Hill

This 1965 double-storey house is next to the ring road of Lycabettus with a great view towards the hill. The necessity to extend the living area of the first floor flat led to the decision to add an extra floor where the bedrooms will be located. The addition would take place on an existing building with no architectural significance as well as the minimum intervention to the structural elements and the apparent need for exterior renovation formed the context within the extension project would take place.  The main façade meander formed by horizontal slabs and vertical walls connects the existing building to the new volume.

The additional floor where the family’s sleeping areas are, is connected through the main staircase to the first floor where the living areas are located. A large opening allows the immediate spatial connection of the bedrooms to the terrace. The outdoor sitting area is protected by a wooden pergola that also blocks the view to the electromechanical installations. The secondary staircase leading to the highest terrace is fully embedded to the shading structure as an architectural feature. The implementation of this project is an example of how one can transform a simple house extension, with low architectural significance, to a fascinating process with an outcome not easily recognizable.
